Paris, the first city in the world to welcome flying taxis

On the occasion of the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, the French capital will take up the challenge: with Volocity, it will become the first city in the world to enter a new era of urban transport with the help of flying taxis.

Regardless of its sporting achievements, France has already won a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics: for aviation innovation. By partnering with German start-up Volocopter, which has been working on an electric VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) machine for many years, Paris is showing a courtesy to other cities around the world (Dubai, Doha, Singapore, etc.). ), which are usually their showcase for technological innovation.

Volocity has received the green light from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), but for now for trips without passengers.

Volocopter is far from the only company in the world that designs this type of machine. Almost 200 projects would be created. Giants such as Boeing or Airbus work there, as well as Ascendance Flight Technology in France.

They all more or less adopted the same principle: an electric machine equipped with multiple rotors (like on a drone) and fully automated. Guaranteed zero emissions.

The taxi was allowed to fly… with no passengers for now

But few aircraft were cleared to fly. This is the case with Volocity, which has received the green light from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), but for trips without passengers. While waiting for the first global certification for the Olympics.

Each Volocity will have its own pilot, leaving the option of transporting only one person per trip.

In Paris, its launch pad will be installed on a barge on the Seine at the Quai d’Austerlitz. What about nuisance noise for local residents, such as a low-altitude drone? Its manufacturer assures that the machine is four times quieter than a helicopter.

10 flying taxis, three lines

Ten flying taxis should be put into service on three routes: Roissy-Le Bourget, Le Bourget-Austerlitz and Issy-les-Moulineaux-Saint-Cyr-l’École.

Knowing that no one wants to take any chances, each Volocity will have its own pilot. This leaves only one seat on board. There is no doubt why these first flights are said to be reserved for VIPs. This can calm us down from the fear of failure: 9 batteries will be replaced after each flight.
